March 2024 Highlights

A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
March presents many opportunities to engage with the arts. The Rainbow Fish teaches children and families about the concept of opposites, while Las Cafeteras and Ladysmith Black Mambazo share cultural music and messages from around the world. The Music Department performs a variety of concerts while the Department of Theatre continues their production of Antigonick. Thank you for connecting with us. With Gratitude, Mark Fitzgerald Wilson

JUST ADDED! DARLENE LOVE | FRI MAY 17
We are thrilled to announce that the legendary Darlene Love is returning to Zoellner to perform Love Songs on Friday, May 17 at 7:30pm (in lieu of Max Weinberg's Jukebox). Through the years, Darlene Love continues to captivate audiences worldwide with her warm, gracious stage presence and superb performances. She has received Oscar and Grammy Awards, accumulated numerous Billboard hits, and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone has proclaimed Darlene Love to be "one of the greatest singers of all time" and that certainly rings true, but perhaps Paul Shaffer says it even more concisely: "Darlene Love is Rock N' Roll!" Thanks to Air Products for their support of this concert.

DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE: ANTIGONICK | MAR 1 & 2
An Antigone for our times. Morality vs. patriotism. To honor the law or follow one's conscience? Ancient Greece looks suspiciously similar to the present day as Antigone is faced with impossible decisions.

THE RAINBOW FISH | SAT MAR 2
Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia presents a tale about the most beautiful fish in the sea, whose scales shimmer in all the colors of the rainbow. Further adventures follow as Rainbow Fish finds the courage to explore the great unknown deep sea, discovering a new world with wonderful sights and friendly creatures of all shapes, sizes and colors who are eager to make his acquaintance. This performance is part of the Lehigh Valley Reilly Children's Hospital Family Series.

GARY BARTZ & LU JAZZ REPERTORY ORCHESTRA | SAT MAR 2
This year's Horger Jazz Artist, the great saxophonist/composer Gary Bartz, in collaboration with director Bill Warfield and the LU Jazz program, premieres a new Jazz suite. Bartz has performed with Miles Davis, Art Blakey, and McCoy Tyner, and has created a Jazz legacy with his own NTU Troop. His impact on Jazz and accomplishments are far too extensive to list here. Bill Warfield, director.

EUGENE ALBULESCU: A STEINWAY FANTASY CONCERT | SUN MAR 3
Lehigh Professor and award-winning Steinway Artist Eugene Albulescu performs piano masterworks bu Bach, Haydn and Chopni, celebrating Lehigh's new Concert Steinway piano which he selected for Baker Hall.

LAS CAFETERAS | FRI MAR 8
The LA Times describes Las Cafeteras as a "uniquely Angeleno mishmash of punk, hip-hop, beat music, cumbia and rock." Their Afro-Mexican beats, rhythms and rhymes complement inspiring lyrics that document stories of a community seeking love and justice in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles. This socially conscious band uses music as a vehicle to build bridges aong different cultures while creating fabulous music that makes you want to dance!

LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO | SUN MAR 10
Graceland was Paul Simon's comeback album, and the secret to its success in winning the Grammy for Album of the Year was the vocal ensemble Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The undisputed kings of South African a capella, Ladysmith Black Mambazo share a joy and excitement that breaks down barriers and unites everyone through the universal language of music. Weaving an uplifting message of peace and love, this vocal powerhouse radiates joy, performing South African classics alongside gospel favorites.

CHOIR, DOLCE AND GLEE CLUB | FRI MAR 22 & SAT MAR 23
The "Best Of" concert includes a new work by Steven Sametz for choir, dancers, and puppets. Steven Sametz, director; Hana Cai, associate director.

THE SAINT-GEORGES PROJECT | SUN MAR 24
Joseph Bologne, the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, was one of the most important violinist-composers of the 18th century. Repertoire: Saint-Georges' Violin Sonatas; two world premieres by composers Shawn Okpebholo and Evan Williams. Michael Jorgensen, violin and Steve Beck, piano.
