New Orleans, 1813. On the eve of the city passing from Spanish to American rule, the world as Beartrice Albans knows it is shifting. A wealthy free woman of color, she has navigated the complex system of plaçage to secure a life of luxury for her three daughters. But as the Louisiana heat rises and a regime change looms, the walls of her grand house begin to close in. Marcus Gardley’s lush, lyrical drama is a haunting exploration of Black female agency, the cost of freedom, and the ghosts we inherit.
